On holiday with a lease car: everything you need to pay attention to
A car holiday in Europe can be a good choice if you prefer not to go on a flight holiday or if you want to visit multiple cities in Europe. But not everyone has a car that is big enough for all your stuff or in which you can comfortably travel long distances. In that case, a rental or lease car can offer the solution. But what are the advantages of leasing a car for a holiday? And what should you pay attention to when you go on holiday with a lease car? In this blog we explain what you should take into account.
Why lease a car for a holiday?
If you do not own a car, renting or leasing a car is a good option if you want to go on holiday. However, there are still several differences between leasing and renting a car that can influence your choice. First of all, it is important to look at the period for which you will need the car. Is this only for a week? Then renting a car is probably cheaper, because you pay per day. But are you going on holiday for 3 weeks or longer? Then there is a good chance that a short-lease car is cheaper than renting. This is because you pay a fixed monthly amount for a short-lease, which is often relatively cheaper than renting in the long term. In addition, it is good to look at what payment options there are. For example, at many rental companies you can only pay by credit card, while at a leasing company you usually pay by invoice. Finally, it is important to decide for yourself how important the exact make and model are to you: with a rental company, there is a good chance that you will end up with a “comparable model”, while with a lease contract you know exactly which make and model of car you will receive at the time of signing.
On holiday with a lease car: what should you pay attention to?
If you have finally decided to go on holiday with a lease car, it is a good idea to look at your contract again. This way you will be well prepared for your trip and you will know exactly what the agreements are. Below we will list a few things that are important to check before you go on your trip.
Certificate of Insurance and Permitted Countries
If you go on holiday with your lease car, it is important to have the so-called green card, or insurance certificate, with you. With a green card you can prove that your vehicle is also insured abroad. The insurance certificate also states in which countries you are insured and contains important telephone numbers that you can call if there are any problems. Before you travel, check carefully in which countries you are insured, because it is only permitted to travel with the lease car to countries where you are insured. For example, the countries Morocco, Turkey and Russia are not permitted. Do you have questions about the permitted countries or do you want to apply for a green card? This can be done via contractbeheer@shortleaseland.nl.
Environmental stickers and vignettes
If you are going on holiday abroad, it is a good idea to determine the route you are going to drive in advance and to check which environmental stickers and/or toll stickers you need. A toll sticker is a sticker that is stuck on the inside of the windscreen to show that you have paid toll for the roads, while an environmental sticker is mandatory in certain European countries as soon as you drive in an environmental zone. For example, in some environmental zones in Spain, France and Germany you need an environmental sticker, while for Austria, Switzerland, Bulgaria and Hungary, among others, you need a valid toll sticker to be allowed to drive there.
Number of agreed kilometers
At the start of the lease contract, you indicated how many kilometers you expect to drive per year. It is important to take this into account if you want to go on holiday with your lease car. The kilometers per year are converted into a permitted number of kilometers per month, so if you have a contract with a term of less than a year, it is a good idea to check how many kilometers you are allowed to drive during the term of the contract. If you drive more kilometers than is permitted, a surcharge per kilometer will be charged. Do you have a current lease contract and do you want to increase the number of kilometers? Then contact the contract management department via contractbeheer@shortleaseland.nl.
Allowed drivers
Are you going on a long trip with several people? Then it is important to check in advance who is allowed to drive the lease car. In the case of a private contract, these are the regular driver named on the lease contract and his/her fiscal partner. However, we do need a copy of both driving licenses. Do you also want to add other drivers? That is possible, for an additional fee of €19 per additional permitted driver. Here too, we must receive a valid driving license from additional drivers and we must also have given written permission for the use of the car by these drivers.
Also in the case of a business contract we need to receive a driver's license from the regular driver. In addition, here too there is an additional charge of €19 per additional permitted driver and we need to receive a copy of a valid driver's license from everyone.
